Distinguished Educator – Robert Gaskin

Robert James Gaskin Jr., a native of St. Mary's County, is a highly accomplished educator with a 48-year career in Prince George's County. After earning his degree in Industrial Arts Education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, he began teaching at SpauldingJunior High School while pursuing a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Bowie State University. Gaskin later took on various roles at the middle and high school level, including Counselor, Vice Principal and Principal.

Gaskin's journey led him to the PGCPS Human Resources Department, where he made a significant impact as a Recruitment Officer, Director of Staffing, and ultimately Chief Human Resources Officer before retiring in 2017. His innovative recruitment strategies, such as utilizing the "RV" or Recruitment Vehicle, allowed him to travel nationally to recruit from Universities, particularly HBCUs. He further expanded his reach by traveling internationally to hire over 1,000 certified teachers.

Gaskin's leadership embodied respect, inclusion, diversity and excellence. He spearheaded initiatives like the "Grow-Your-Own" program, Resident Teachers, Future Educators of America, Men in Education, Retire-to-Rehire program, and increased the number of bilingual educators.

Beyond education, Gaskin cherishes his role as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife, Flora, have two children and two grandchildren, all of whom graduated from Prince George's County Public Schools.

He is also a distinguished member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Bee Hive Lodge No. 66, Free & Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliation in Charles County, and Westphalia Christian Community Church.
