Distinguished Professional — Brian Thompson, Suitland HS Class of 1988

Brian A. Thompson’s artistic journey started in the third grade where he was allowed to draw on the back of his classwork after completing his assignments. As a Suitland High School freshman, Brian was chosen to participate in the newly developed Suitland Visual & Performing Arts Center and the Suitland Vocational School, where he studied drafting. Upon graduating from high school, Brian began a seven-year apprenticeship at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Brian, the first African American to design a U.S. banknote, is now a Senior Journeyman Banknote Designer at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where he has worked for 34 years. A graduate of the University of the District of Columbia, Brian received the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2001. In 2013, he became nationally recognized as the designer of the new $100 banknote, commonly referred to as ‘The Benjamin.’ Brian’s historic milestone was featured in The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Esquire Magazine, Coin World, and on The Tom Joyner Morning Show. Brian’s artistry and inspired leadership extends into his community. Brian has served as Youth Minister and Assistant Pastor for Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Capitol Heights. He is currently Senior Pastor of Easel Outreach, a ministry he founded with his wife, Pamela.
