Distinguished Educator – Dr. Carey M Wright

Dr. Carey M. Wright, a nationally recognized education leader, was named Maryland’s State Superintendent of Schools in 2023. This appointment marks a full-circle moment for the Maryland native, who was a teacher and education leader in her home state before expanding her career nationally.

As Maryland’s education chief, Dr. Wright has established clear priorities for the state including collaborating with local school systems to improve student achievement and maximizing the potential of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future legislation.
Dr. Wright holds the distinction of leading two different state education agencies. Before her role in Maryland, she was the longest-serving State Superintendent in Mississippi history.

Her national leadership roles include service on the board of directors for the Council of Chief State School Officers and Chiefs for Change and a U.S. Secretary of Education appointment to the National Assessment Governing Board. Dr. Wright holds undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Maryland.
